Why Midwifery?

All too often, we hear from women who don’t know what types of services midwives provide, or think they only offer treatment and care for women who are pregnant or giving birth. It’s important for girls and women in our community to know about the care midwives provide, and that there are options available to them that may be better suited to their unique needs than the health care services they’re used to receiving.

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) and Certified Midwives (CMs) are primary care providers who specialize in reproductive, gynecologic and family planning. With the growing shortage of physicians and significant effects of women's health care disparities, improving access to midwifery care is paramount. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) offer expert care, education, counseling and support to women and their families throughout the caregiving partnership, including pregnancy, birth and postpartum period.

“Reestablishing midwifery within its multicultural roots as a stand-alone profession is imperative to public health and health equity.”
